The story behind the coin
The obverse photograph shows Elizabeth II with NEW ZEALAND and the date 1969. Its companion reverse reads COOK BICENTENARY and ONE DOLLAR, bringing together a portrait, a sailing ship, the islands of New Zealand and the date 1769. This is the commemorative dollar shown in the source collection, rather than the later everyday kiwi-dollar design. The photographs retain the wear and lighting of that specimen.
