The story behind the coin
The source identifies this New Style Athenian tetradrachm as an issue struck in 89–88 BC, under the magistrates Apellikon, Gorgias and Aristonos. Athena wears a helmet on the obverse. The reverse shows an owl standing on an amphora, a griffin to the right and a surrounding wreath. Both faces come from one paired photograph.
