Elizabeth II faces Australia’s coat of arms and a large 50. This is the round 1966 issue, before the familiar twelve-sided fifty-cent coin.

The story behind the coin

The Royal Australian Mint identifies the original 1966 fifty-cent coin as circular and made from 80% silver and 20% copper. Its reverse shows the Commonwealth coat of arms, supported by a kangaroo and an emu, above 50. This display pairs separately photographed examples of the same round design: Paul Templeton’s dated portrait side and Roke’s coat-of-arms side. Their different surface tones are retained rather than recolored to match.

Which side is heads?

The artwork changes, but every virtual toss still has a 50/50 chance of heads or tails. We simulate the movement; the result is chosen independently. This is not a simulation of the physical balance of a historical coin.
