The story behind the coin
The horse-and-rider motif gives this type its distinctive appearance. The photographed 1780 Holland ducaton has a mounted figure above a small shield on one face and a crowned shield with lion supporters on the other. The date is set into the ornament below the reverse shield; the dark surface tones and worn lettering are retained.
