The story behind the coin
The paired photograph shows the portraits of Carlos I and Amélia on one face. The reverse marks the four-hundredth anniversary of the sea route to India with a central cross, the inscription QUARTO CENTENARIO DA DESCOBERTA DA INDIA and the dates 1498–1898. Its warm toning is part of the original photographed surface.
