The story behind the coin
The portrait-side photograph reads LIBERTY and 1988 at the right, with IN GOD WE TRUST along the left edge. The companion photograph shows Monticello, its name beneath the building, FIVE CENTS and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Both photographs are by Luisino09 and are presented as the front and back of a U.S. nickel. We preserve the visible wear rather than restoring the lettering.
