The story behind the coin
The paired photograph shows Washington facing left, LIBERTY above and 1983 below. A P beside the portrait identifies the Philadelphia version. On the reverse, a bald eagle stands on a bundle of arrows above two olive branches, framed by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUARTER DOLLAR. Both faces come from the same source photograph; the surface marks and natural lighting are retained.
