The story behind the coin
This 1971 one-penny coin pairs a right-facing portrait of Elizabeth II with a crowned portcullis and hanging chains. The reverse reads NEW PENNY above a large numeral 1. Its copper-colored surface gives this small-denomination coin a different character from the silver-colored dollars in the collection.
