The story behind the coin
The paired source files identify this sovereign as catalogue type 3853B. Victoria faces left with her hair tied back, VICTORIA DEI GRATIA around the portrait and 1844 below. The reverse shows a crowned royal shield within a wreath, with small emblems beneath it. The portrait design is credited to William Wyon and the reverse to Jean Baptiste Merlen; the source photographs are credited to Heritage Auctions.
